The restoration of any artistic work - be it book, building, or painting - prompts the question: restoring it to what?
The Cathedral Notre Dame de Paris took nearly a century to build (1163-1260), and architectural styles had already shifted during those years. King Louis XIV commissioned a major renovation of the choir (1699-1714). In the turbulent wake of the French Revolution, Napoleon’s coronation, and Victor Hugo’s novel, Eugene Viollet-le-Duc conducted extensive exterior and interior renovations. Further modern renovations took place in the late 19th and early 20th century, but that story remains to be told.
The high altar and the choir of Notre Dame have gone through several drastic changes, all of which drew strong and mixed reactions when they happened, and in ensuing decades.
Below is a pictorial timeline of the high altar and choir of Notre Dame de Paris, with as much attribution as I can manage. I arranged the files chronologically by the date they represented, not necessarily the date they were created.
